Felt Christmas Crafts for Giving and Keeping

Handmade felt Christmas crafts and other wool products make nice gifts. Of course, most crafters keep some to use in their own homes.

The materials can be used to make many items. Felting, knitting and weaving began thousands of years ago, out of necessity. Other than the very wealthy, everyone made their own clothes and floor coverings. Today, the age-old practices have become popular hobbies.

In addition to the natural wools, synthetic fibers are also available. However, while the synthetics were the most popular choices for many years, the natural wools are once again gaining in popularity.

Synthetics are not biodegradable. They can cause allergic reactions. They are less resistant to heat. Carpets composed of the natural fibers produce less toxic gases and are therefore better for the indoor air quality of the home.

Rugs are some of the handmade wool products that are beautiful and fun to create. Weaving looms are typically used to construct them. Rugs add color, but are not purely decorative. They muffle sounds. Large carpets add warmth to the room.

Some of the felt Christmas crafts include decorations for the tree, advent calendars, place mats, coasters, and felt christmas stockings. The material is available in many different colors. It is created by matting and pressing woolen fibers. The resulting material clings to itself naturally.

You can make a story board for a child by covering a piece of wood or poster with a large piece of neutral-colored felt. Using small pieces of the material, you can make animals, trees and other items. The miniatures will cling to the felted board, but can easily be removed and changed around as the story changes.

Children like making handmade wool products, too. The simplest felt Christmas crafts can be completed by elementary school children.

You can use cookie cutters as patterns for small ornaments. You simply cut two identical pieces of felt, stuff them with cotton and sew them together. You can decorate the outside using a glue gun. Bits of yarn or hemp can be used to make a hanger for the ornaments.

Kits are available for more complicated projects. You can make a life-size Santa or snowman with the affordable kits available today.
